Ingredients

For the Tofu
  • 1 block Silken Tofu Delivers a creamy texture and absorbs rich flavors beautifully.
For the Sauce
  • 2-3 cloves Garlic, minced Imparts aromatic flavor; adjust according to personal preference.
  • 2 tbsp Soy Sauce Provides umami depth and saltiness; consider low-sodium options for a healthier choice.
  • 2 tbsp Black Vinegar Adds a tangy depth to the sauce; use rice vinegar as a substitute if needed.
  • 1 tbsp Sesame Oil Offers a unique nutty flavor that shouldn’t be swapped for regular oils.
  • 1 tbsp Vegetarian Oyster Sauce Brings sweetness and umami; a mushroom sauce works for a stronger flavor.
  • 1 tbsp Sugar Balances the saltiness of the sauce; adjust for your desired taste.
  • 1/2 tbsp Chili Oil Adds a kick; feel free to omit for a milder dish.
For Garnish
  • 3 stalks Chopped Spring Onions Adds a fresh crunch to the dish.
  • 1/4 cup Chopped Coriander/Cilantro Enhances flavor and brings a burst of color.

Equipment

  • steamer
  • mixing bowl
  • Heat-proof Plate

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Begin by draining any excess water from the silken tofu. Slice it carefully into thick pieces, about 1/2 to 1 inch wide, making sure they stay intact. Set aside on a heat-proof plate that fits into your steamer.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine minced garlic, soy sauce, black vinegar, sesame oil, vegetarian oyster sauce, sugar, and optional chili oil. Whisk everything together until the sugar dissolves, and the mixture is well-blended.
  3. Set up your steamer or fill a pan with an inch of boiling water, ensuring it’s simmering gently. Carefully place the plate with tofu slices into the steamer and steam for 8-10 minutes.
  4. Once the tofu is steamed, carefully remove the plate from the steamer. Let the excess liquid drain off the tofu. Pour the fragrant soy garlic sauce generously over the hot tofu.
  5. Garnish your Steamed Tofu with freshly chopped spring onions and coriander for a pop of color and freshness. Serve this warm dish right away.
